Are You A Fashion Victim?

Are You A Fashion Victim?

Strengthening your core helps you to avoid the assault.

Did you know that when you physically strengthen your core it leads to greater balance and stability within your body and enables all of your parts to work together? Guess what? This amazing concept can be applied to your wardrobe too!

“I’m just a victim of fashion and accessories!”

Have you ever heard that phrase? It’s used to justify a trendy fashion purchase, and I knew someone that used it a lot. How many times  have you, myself included, gone to the store in pursuit of the latest “it” item? You may have worn that item once, maybe twice, but then looked at it in the sober light of day and said, “What the heck was I thinking?” I’ve done it more than I care to admit.

During one of my closet-purge-spring-cleans (usually when these items surfaced) I had an epiphany. It was time for me to think differently about my closet and set parameters around what I bought. Whether it was trending or not, I had to absolutely love it to buy it because if I loved it, I’d wear it. And thus, my core-closet principle emerged.

Armed with this new perspective, I began to outfit my closet with the core basics. What are these? They can include your “LBD” little black dress, a white top, a great pair of jeans, dress pants, and a basic jacket. Having these gave me a great deal of freedom and flexibility when it came to choosing what to wear. Here are some tips that worked for me and I’m sure will work for you:

  • Keep your basics as minimal and unassuming as possible. No bells, no whistles, this is what makes them timeless.
  • Build around your core pieces with trendier ones…this is where your “it” items come in.
  • Choose styles that truly flatter your body type.
  • Is your skin tone warm or cool? Choose colors that you genuinely love and that flatter your skin tone.
  • Finally, choose accessories that complement rather than compete with your overall look.

When you choose timeless and versatile pieces you are in fact strengthening your core…closet that is.  It’s that simple.
